Tolls without gates, also known as “free-flow”, began operating in Brazil in March this year. The technology, despite being present in other countries, was especially challenging to implement in Brazil, according to Cristiane Gomes, CTO at CCR, the company responsible for managing the highways where the technology was implemented.

“The first free flow solution for tolls in Brazil came into operation in March. This has existed in the world for years, but in Brazil it has its specificities that other places in the world do not have”, Cristiane told Digital Look during BMC Connect São Paulo last Wednesday.

Among the specificities mentioned by Cristiane is the billing system in Brazil. “Toll collection here in Brazil is per axle, anywhere in the world the toll is charged by large cars and small cars, not here, so all of this makes this technology even more challenging”, stated the company’s head of technology.

“We think of roads as pavement, construction, and it is also, but today there is a lot of technology. You stop your car on the road and a camera already identifies that you need help. This is all technology. Behind all this service, is technology, mainly to guarantee user safety”, added Cristiane.

In addition to charging, another challenge mentioned was precisely payment evasion, the main reason why toll booths have gates. “We also needed a way to monitor cars that evade tolls. So everything about this technology is disruptive, including the payment system together with banking institutions. You can pay with pix, through the tag, through the app”, he added.

Tolls without a barrier: how does payment work?

According to CCR, the payment method is similar to some that already exist, such as Sem Parar, ConectCar, Veloe and Taggy. The difference, of course, is that there are no gates, like at normal toll booths. Cameras identify vehicles using tags installed on windshields or license plates.

Identification of the car for billing can be done in the following ways:

Radio frequency tag: in this case, the driver receives his bill monthly and needs to place a tag on the windshield. License plate reading: the driver can access charges via the dealership’s website or app, and can pay via PIX, credit card or digital wallet.

Those who pass through the toll and do not pay the amount after 15 calendar days will commit a serious traffic violation, which results in five points on the driver’s license and a fine of R$195.23.

Drivers with a tag have a 5% discount on fares. Light vehicles have a progressive deduction from the second visit to the charging point, as long as it is in the same direction and month.
