At the opening of the VII Smart City Ecuador 2024 Congress, which took place from June 26 to 27 and presents ideas on how to make cities more sustainable and habitable, Minister Sonsoles García detailed the opportunities of placing Free Trade Zones at the center of smart cities, as engines of progress, innovation and development.

The congress is attended by opinion leaders, public sector authorities, private companies and experts. This scenario generates the exchange of experiences and they learn about the opportunities and challenges presented by the main global trends in technology, telecommunications, security, cyber security, sustainability, mobility, urban planning, environment, tourism, health, innovation, academia, governance, among other topics.

During her speech, Minister Sonsoles García pointed out that free zones are spaces that stimulate innovation, facilitate collaboration, the exchange of knowledge, efficiency in the use of available resources, the transfer of technology and productive chains. In this way, they promote the development of Smart Cities seeking synergies with the environment, mobility, infrastructure, economic sector, technology and innovation.

He announced that a regional territorial geoportal is being developed that allows for the georeferencing of areas, industrial parks and investment contracts, which is supported by artificial intelligence and machine learning, cutting-edge tools that allow for the identification of productive potential to attract territorial investments.

For MSMEs, he explained that work is being done on digital transformation tables with the support of the Ministry of Telecommunications, in order to promote the digital check developed by the IDB, which allows for the promotion of electronic commerce, measuring their level of digital maturity and issuing specific recommendations regarding the application of tools or training for continuous improvement.

The Ministry of Production focuses its management on the development of projects that involve the industry with innovation to improve its competitiveness, efficiency and its response to emerging market needs with better and new products and services.
