Italy & Florida Strengthen Economic and Cultural Ties During Ambassador’s Visit

Florida is rapidly becoming a key hub for Italian investment and collaboration, as highlighted by a recent three-day visit from the italian Ambassador to the United States, Marco Peronaci, and consul General of Italy in Miami, Michele Mistò. The diplomatic mission, which concluded earlier this week, underscored a shared commitment to bolstering economic, cultural, and scientific ties between Italy and the Sunshine State.

DeSantis Meeting Sets Stage for Enhanced Cooperation

The visit followed a meeting last Monday in Washington D.C. with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, where discussions centered on expanding trade opportunities and fostering closer ties between the two regions. “Florida,with its dynamic economy and growing Italian-American community,offers significant potential for Italy,which have the potential to grow further,” Ambassador Peronaci emphasized. “The meetings I have had in recent days confirm the great desire for Italy in one of the most dynamic and fastest growing American states: there are great opportunities for our businesses, which all the branches of the Italian system are ready to support.”

Miami Celebrates Italian Heritage and Innovation

The Ambassador’s visit began with a symbolic gesture of goodwill: a visit to the iconic Freedom tower in Miami. The tower was subsequently illuminated in the colors of the Italian flag – green, white, and red – in recognition of the significant contributions of the Italian-American community to the city’s development.

Throughout the mission, ambassador Peronaci engaged with key local leaders, including Miami-Dade County Mayor daniella Levine Cava and Port of Miami Director Hydi Webb.A tour of the MSC passenger terminal,constructed by Italian shipbuilding giant Fincantieri,showcased italian engineering prowess. The terminal,lauded as the largest and most technologically advanced of its kind globally,stands as a testament to Italian innovation.

Fort Lauderdale Showcases Italian Nautical Excellence

Further solidifying the economic partnership,Ambassador Peronaci visited the headquarters of Azimut Benetti and Sanlorenzo Americas in Fort Lauderdale,prominent players in the global nautical sector. These companies exemplify the “Made in Italy” brand, combining customary shipbuilding techniques with cutting-edge industrial capacity and a global outlook. One analyst noted that these brands are key exporters of Italian craftsmanship throughout the Southeastern United States and beyond.

Strengthening Community Ties and supporting Businesses

The Ambassador also took time to connect with the Italian community in Miami, meeting with members of Comites, Italian entrepreneurs, academics, and scientists. Discussions focused on strategies to leverage the skills and experience of Italian professionals in Florida. During a meeting with staff from the Consulate General, the Italian Cultural Institute, and the ICE Office, Ambassador Peronaci expressed gratitude for their efforts in fostering growth within the Italian community, which has made Miami the second-largest U.S. consulate in terms of AIRE (Registry of Italians Residing Abroad) members.

The Ambassador reaffirmed Italy’s commitment to supporting the internationalization of Italian companies,aligning with the growth-focused diplomacy strategy of Vice President of the Council and Minister of Foreign Affairs Tajani.

Florida: A Growing Economic Powerhouse for Italy

Florida’s economic significance was a central theme throughout the visit. The state, boasting the fourth-largest GDP in the U.S. ($1.5 trillion) and ranking as the sixteenth-largest economy worldwide, represents a crucial market for Italian goods and services. In 2023, total trade between Florida and Italy reached $4.8 billion.

Florida has ascended to the fourth position among U.S. states importing Italian products, with a total import value of $3.8 billion.Notably, Florida is home to over 400 Italian companies – the highest number in the United States. .

Collaboration Extends to Medical Research

The Ambassador’s mission also included a visit to the Diabetes Research Institute (DRI) at the University of Miami, coinciding with activities organized by the Consulate General. The DRI, a leading global center dedicated to finding a cure for diabetes, hosted a meeting attended by prominent figures in medical research. This collaboration highlights the expanding scope of Italian-American partnerships beyond traditional economic sectors.

The visit underscores a deepening and multifaceted relationship between Italy and Florida, poised for continued growth and mutual benefit in the years to come.
