In front of 22,012 spectators, Vincenzo Grifo missed his penalty in the 22nd minute. Rönnow had already saved a penalty from Lois Openda at RB Leipzig and secured a draw for the Berliners.

Khedira’s choice leads to a penalty
At Union, Svensson was briefly without left winger Tom Rothe due to muscle problems. Robert Skov made his first league starting appearance. The speedy Yorbe Vertessen started in attack in place of Jordan. Schuster sent out the same team as the 0-0 draw against Mainz.
From the start, both teams tried to disturb their opponents in the early stages of the game, even after losing the ball. When Union’s Rani Khedira prevented Eren Dinkci from finishing in the best shooting position with a plucker, referee Tobias Reichel initially decided for a free kick, but, according to video images, corrected himself to a penalty. As against Leipzig, Rönnow managed to save the penalty. Grifo took only one step before shooting. Günter’s next shot goes just wide. This is the fifth consecutive penalty awarded for Freiburg.
The Union comes out of the break better

Shortly after the break, Berlin’s Christopher Trimmel tested Freiburg goalkeeper Noah Atubolu with a long-range shot (50′). The SC goalkeeper directed attempts by Yorbe Vertessen and Janik Haberer over the bar (58th/90th +3). But the SC also appeared offensive. Günter’s shot was no problem for Rönnow (62′) and defender Philipp Lienhart headed over the goal (87′).
Time.news Editor: Good afternoon, and welcome to our special interview segment! Today, we have the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Markus Wulf, a renowned sports analyst and expert in German football. Dr. Wulf, thank you for joining us today.
Dr. Markus Wulf: Thank you for having me! It’s a pleasure to be here.
Time.news Editor: Let’s dive right into the recent Bundesliga match between 1. FC Union Berlin and SC Freiburg that ended in a goalless draw. The match was highlighted by an impressive penalty save by Union’s goalkeeper Frederik Rönnow. How crucial was that save for Union’s momentum this season?
Dr. Markus Wulf: Rönnow’s save was massive, not only for this match but also for building confidence within the team. Staying undefeated at home is vital for Union, especially after a rocky preseason. A penalty save like this can often serve as a turning point, boosting the morale of the players and reinforcing their belief in Rönnow’s ability as a reliable last line of defense.
Time.news Editor: You mentioned the home performance. Union has not won in their last three league games, but they remain seventh in the standings. How do you assess their season so far under coach Bo Svensson?
Dr. Markus Wulf: Svensson has done a commendable job, especially considering the challenges they faced at the beginning of the season. Securing 16 points at this stage is decent, and the fact that they are still undefeated at home is a testament to their tactical discipline. However, they need to translate draws into wins to maintain their competitive edge as the season progresses. Finding a consistent goal-scoring form will be key.
Time.news Editor: On the other side of the pitch, Freiburg is also on a winless streak but managed to secure a point in Berlin. They’ve jumped to fourth place in the table, at least temporarily. What do you think Julian Schuster’s leadership has brought to the team?
Dr. Markus Wulf: Schuster has inherited a team with a strong foundation laid by Christian Streich, and he seems to have maintained that momentum well so far. His ability to keep the team organized and resilient, even when results aren’t going their way, is crucial. Freiburg is known for their work ethic and tactical flexibility, and Schuster seems to be fostering that spirit. They’ll need to capitalize on their performances and convert draws into wins to stay competitive in the top part of the table.
Time.news Editor: In the match, there were several missed opportunities, including the penalty that Freiburg captain Vincenzo Grifo failed to convert. How critical are these moments in a match, especially in tight league contests like these?
Dr. Markus Wulf: Those moments can be pivotal. Penalties often shift the momentum of a game, and missing one can be deflating for the team, especially when it’s a key player like Grifo. In tightly contested leagues, every point counts, and not taking advantage of scoring opportunities can lead to greater stress as the season progresses. It’s crucial for players to regain their confidence quickly after such incidents if they are to maintain their effectiveness in subsequent matches.
Time.news Editor: both teams have shown strong defensive capabilities, but inconsistency in attack has plagued them recently. What advice would you give these coaches to enhance their offensive play moving forward?
Dr. Markus Wulf: Both coaches need to focus on creating more dynamic offensive strategies. For Union, utilizing pacey players like Yorbe Vertessen effectively can provide the width and depth needed to stretch opposing defenses. Freiburg, on the other hand, could benefit from more fluid interplay in their attacking third and better movement off the ball to create space for scoring opportunities. Moreover, harnessing the strengths of their respective key players will be essential for breaking down rigid defenses.
Time.news Editor: Those are excellent insights, Dr. Wulf. Thank you for sharing your expertise with us today! I’m sure our readers will appreciate your analysis of this intriguing match and the current Bundesliga landscape.
