The embassies of France, the United Kingdom and the United States of America affirmed, in a joint statement issued on Sunday, following consultations held between them in Tunisia, their full support for the efforts of the Acting UN Envoy to Libya, Stephanie Khoury, to bring together the Libyan parties to resolve the Central Bank crisis.

The statement urged the Libyan parties to quickly reach the necessary settlements to begin restoring the integrity and stability of the bank’s institutions and its standing with the international financial community, warning that Libya’s economic and financial stability is at stake.

The statement praised the efforts of the United Nations in Libya, calling on all parties to “work towards reaching long-term agreements on the distribution of oil revenues for the benefit of all Libyan citizens.”

The tripartite statement stressed the need for all parties to avoid further unilateral measures that could undermine Libya’s stability, and instead take meaningful steps to calm the situation, according to the statement.

Last Monday and Tuesday, the UN mission sponsored talks between the Presidential Council, the House of Representatives, and the Supreme Council of State to resolve the crisis of the Central Bank of Libya, which led to the cessation of oil production.

The UN mission announced, following the talks, that the House of Representatives and the Supreme Council of State had reached “important understandings” regarding “the mechanism and deadlines for appointing the governor and board of directors of the Central Bank,” without mentioning any further details in this regard.

She pointed out that the representatives of the two councils “requested an additional period of 5 days to complete their consultations and reach a final consensus on the necessary arrangements to manage the bank until a new governor and board of directors are appointed.”
