New boycott by France of Spanish products after a long season of calm. Hundreds of French farmers blocked a highway near the border with Spain this Thursday morning to prevent the entry of trucks loaded with Spanish wine. They did so as a sign of protest in a complex and very intense scenario due to the escalation of inflation and worse than usual harvests due to poor weather conditions.

It was a surprise operation, organized in Narbonne, that caught the Spanish truck drivers unexpectedly. The protesters, winegrowers from the region, burned tires on the asphalt and stopped the trucks that were traveling on the A-9 at the Le Boulou border crossing, in the south of France, blocking their access and, later, emptying some vehicles and destroying them. the merchandise. The objective of this attack was to prevent the entry of Spanish wine and demand an end to its import, as reported by the Spanish Confederation of Freight Transport (CETM), the main association of transporters.

The French threw and trampled pallets loaded with wine bottles and emptied the trucks transporting this alcoholic beverage. In addition, they also threw a load of tomatoes which they set on fire.

The Mossos d’Esquadra are working in collaboration with the French Gendarmerie and diverted heavy vehicles to La Junquera, but the transporters’ association considers that this action is “insufficient.”

“Severe” sanctions

For this reason, CETM asked the authorities to ensure that these types of attacks do not occur and to carry out the necessary actions so that those responsible stop acting “with total impunity.” «They must answer before the law and pay for the acts they are committing. Furthermore, we must remember that in the event of any demonstration, the right to free movement of travelers and goods must be respected,” they defended.

The Coordinator of Farmers and Ranchers Organizations (COAG) and the Union of Small Farmers and Ranchers (UPA) also condemned these attacks. From COAG they demanded “severe” sanctions against the French Government and against the farmers, whom they accused of “complicity.” In turn, they demanded that the European Union guarantee the free circulation of agricultural products.
