The day reserved for the texts of the communist group began with a sometimes stormy and passionate debate, which resulted in a vote against them. The deputies of the communist group have indeed failed this Thursday to pass a resolution condemning the “apartheid regime established by the State of Israel”.

Communist Jean-Paul Lecoq defended a “deep attachment” to “the existence of the State of Israel”. But he denounced the situation of the Palestinians, which “juridically comes under a situation of apartheid”.

He received the support of ecologist deputies and LFI, but not of the socialists who will propose their own resolution. “I understand your legitimate desire to leave the question out of indifference,” launched Jérôme Guedj (PS). But he rejected the term “apartheid”, blaming it for “racialising and essentialising” a “territory dispute”.

The use of the term “apartheid” to designate Israel’s policies towards Israeli Arabs – descendants of Palestinians who remained on their lands after the creation of the Jewish state – and Palestinians in the West Bank, Gaza and Jerusalem Is dated a few years ago.

Since 2021, it has been regularly taken up by major human rights NGOs, such as Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International.

The same year, the former Minister of Foreign Affairs Jean-Yves Le Drian had also mentioned a “risk of apartheid” in the Jewish state, which had prompted the summoning of the French ambassador to Israel.

However, the president of the Renaissance group Aurore Bergé saw it as a “gesture of detestation of the State of Israel”. The presidential camp, the right and the RN voted against the resolution, rejected by 199 votes against 71.

The left-wing deputies, even those opposed to the text, on the other hand sharply criticized the trials for “anti-Semitism”.
