French Parliament Approves Impeachment Procedures for Emmanuel Macron

by times news cr

The French National Assembly (Parliament) announced its approval of the “left” initiative to launch procedures to remove President Emmanuel Macron, by 12 votes to 10.

The petition was submitted by the “New Left Popular Front” against Macron’s refusal to appoint a government led by it after winning the elections, and the appointment of Michel Barnier from the minority Republican Party, which occupies fourth place in parliament in terms of representation.

According to the information, “If this stage is passed, the text of the resolution must then be approved by a legislative committee of 73 deputies, where the left holds only 24 seats, and then two-thirds of the members of the National Assembly (385 deputies) must vote on it within two weeks, and the last two stages must also be completed in the Senate of Parliament, where the left does not have a majority. However, if the text is approved by the Senate (232 votes) and the two chambers meet in a joint session, the resolution must be supported by 617 out of 925 parliamentarians from both chambers, in which case the president’s dismissal is immediate.”

It is noteworthy that in 2016, the National Assembly office rejected a similar decision to dismiss the then French President, François Hollande.

In the early parliamentary elections held last July, the left-wing bloc won the majority of votes, obtaining 182 seats out of 577, while Macron’s presidential coalition “Together for the Republic” came in second place, obtaining 168 seats in the National Assembly, and the right-wing National Rally party, with its Republican allies, became the third force in parliament, obtaining 143 seats. Thus, no political force obtained the majority needed to form a new government, and the formation of the new French government, headed by Prime Minister Michel Barnier, is expected to be announced this week.
