French rugby player Melvin Jamine has been banned for 34 weeks and fined 30,000 euros after posting a racist video on social media, the French Rugby Federation said.
During Team France’s tour of Argentina earlier this month, the 25-year-old Toulon player was photographed saying: “The first Arab I meet on my way, I’m going to hit his head.” The Federation’s Disciplinary Council decided that Jamine “has damaged the image of rugby”, reports BTA.
Eight of the 34 weeks can be replaced by charity work, including campaigns against alcohol and social media addiction, as well as meetings at rugby schools “highlighting the benefits of sport and the fight against discrimination”.
Jamine apologized for his comments, saying: “I understand that this may have offended and hurt many people and I want to be clear that these comments do not represent the values of the French rugby team.
Racism in all its forms is unacceptable and goes against everything I believe in.”
