French rugby wants to stay at the top by freezing its payroll

In the absence of a world title at home, French rugby can console itself by noting that it has – by far – the best championship on the planet. Today, “four out of 10 professional players” play in France, recalled René Bouscatel, the president of the National Rugby League (LNR), on Monday during the presentation of the institution’s new strategic plan.

This notably marks the extension of the current formats of the Top 14, Pro D2, and rugby 7s, despite the appearance on the international calendar of the “Nations Cup”, a new competition between the 12 best teams in the world.
