In a developing scandal, a unnamed BBC presenter has been hit with fresh allegations, adding to the growing crisis surrounding Britain’s national broadcaster. The mystery star’s reputation was further tarnished on Sunday as tabloid newspaper, The Sun, alleged that the presenter had engaged in a video call with a teenager while in his underwear. Earlier revelations about the star allegedly paying the young person tens of thousands of pounds for explicit images have already caused significant controversy, with the exchanges dating back to 2020 when the individual was only 17 years old.

The Sun has based its reporting on allegations brought forward by the teenager’s mother, who has signed a sworn affidavit supporting her claims. Notably, she has refused payment for telling her story, and thus far, no one involved in the scandal has been publicly named.

Over the weekend, several BBC and industry sources spoke to Deadline, repeatedly mentioning the same individual as the potential identity of the presenter. Amid rampant and defamatory speculation on social media, at least four other presenters, including Gary Lineker, have vehemently denied being the mystery star.

The mother, in an interview with The Sun, recounted seeing an image on her child’s phone showing the BBC presenter in his underwear, “leaning forward, getting ready for my child to perform for him.” While The Sun did not claim to have direct sight of the image or any other evidence, the mother made the shocking revelation that her child had been using the money from the star to fund a drug habit. Moreover, she claimed to have accidentally overheard a phone conversation where the presenter exclaimed, “I told you not to f***ing ring me,” unsettling her further.

The BBC has issued a statement saying that it takes the allegations “very seriously” but has refrained from providing further comments at this time. The national broadcaster faces mounting pressure to address its handling of the matter and provide answers amidst the growing scandal.

According to The Sun, the teenager’s mother lodged a formal complaint with the BBC about the presenter on May 19. The star, who had continued to host high-profile BBC programs until recently, is currently off-air due to the ever-widening scandal. However, there has been no confirmation of any formal suspension.

Caroline Dinenage, Chair of the UK Parliament’s Culture, Media, and Sport Committee, emphasized that the BBC has “some very serious questions to answer.” In her article in The Sun, she stressed the need for TV companies to have proper processes in place, preventing the abuse of power and influence by broadcasters at the expense of others’ careers.

Rachel Reeves, Labour’s Shadow Chancellor, called for the BBC to rectify the situation and “give greater clarity” regarding the ongoing case. Additionally, concerns have been raised about whether the BBC has informed the police, given that the teenager was allegedly 17 years old when first in contact with the presenter.

Under the UK’s Protection of Children Act, it is a criminal offense to possess or distribute indecent images of individuals under the age of 18, even with their consent.

The BBC assured the public that they treat any allegations seriously and have processes in place to deal with them proactively. However, if attempts to contact individuals involved go unanswered, it may hinder the progress of their investigations. The broadcaster vowed to act upon any new information provided, including that from newspapers, in line with internal processes.

BBC Director General Tim Davie will face the press on Tuesday with the publication of the broadcaster’s annual report, where he is expected to address the ongoing scandal.
