Baku will take the baton on September 19 and Moscow on September 22 Juuri Language Weekstaking place in different cities of the world from September 15 to 23 and dedicated to the study, preservation and popularization of the national language of Mountain Jews, the press service of STMEGI told Day.Az.
On different days, the cities of Juuri Week will also be Berlin, Derbent, Jerusalem, New York and Pyatigorsk. The relay will end on September 24 – International Juuri Day. On this day, an online festival will be held in all participating cities. The organizer of the event is the International Charitable Foundation of Mountain Jews STMEGI.
Festival participants will connect from their cities and alternately read poetry and prose, excerpts from new and classic works. Songs in Juuri will also be aired. In addition, experts will discuss the current state of this language and the development of a long-term program for its preservation and study. Hundreds of viewers will join the broadcast: representatives of the Mountain Jewish community around the world, public figures, scientists and teachers, linguistic researchers, authors of textbooks and manuals, writers and everyone who is interested in Juuri.
The events of the Juuri Language Week and its culmination, the festival, will be broadcast online on the First Jewish TV channel.
Djuuri is officially recognized by UNESCO as an endangered language. It belongs to the Iranian group of Indo-European languages, dating back to Old Persian and Hebrew. Traditionally, it was spoken by Mountain Jews of modern Azerbaijan, Dagestan, and Kabardino-Balkaria. Today, about 100 thousand native speakers live in Israel, 30 thousand each in Russia and Azerbaijan.
