The Middle Ages became a fetish for early 20th century suffragettes. Not because they admired frail and stunned women trapped in their turrets waiting for handsome knights to rescue them, but because they saw emblems of freedom in iron ladies like Joan of Arc or Eleanor of Aquitaine, who defied the norms of their time. They venerated them, dressed up as them, recovered their slogans and even put their faces on posters asking for the female vote.
