From October, three unmarked municipal police cars will control driving speed in Riga /

by times news cr

The devices are currently being tested in the streets of Riga, but they will start active work from October, Ozola informed.

Cars equipped with radars will be able to perform their work both while participating in traffic and standing on the side of the road.

The speed violation will be recorded automatically, but the information about it will be transferred to the Road Traffic Safety Directorate (CSDD). After that, the gathered information, including information about the vehicle, will be handed over to the Riga Municipal Police (RPP) for making a decision on the imposition of a penalty.

Unmarked cars will not be emergency vehicles and will not be used to stop vehicles in the event of violations.

In cases where a driver of a vehicle commits a serious violation that endangers other residents, the RPP officers in the unmarked car will call additional forces who will be able to arrest the violators.

As Ozola explained, after evaluating the performance of non-marked and radar-equipped RPP vehicles and the budget options, next year some marked RPP cars could also be equipped with radars.

The deputy chairperson of the City Council informed that part of the funds collected for the imposed penalties will be directed to CSDD, part will remain at the disposal of RPP, and the rest will be credited to the Riga municipality budget.
