(ANSA) – ROME, JULY 9 – “Before the disease that struck, dad, like almost everyone, was not aware of how widespread asbestos is still in our country and how many lives it therefore endangers today, but also tomorrow given the long incubation period. The battle of the National Asbestos Observatory (ONA) is therefore a battle of civilization and justice against a real emergency that dad discovered too late and for which we know, my wife Giulia and I, that he did not want to fail to give his active support, and this even if the issue had unfortunately not concerned him personally”. This was said by an emotional Stella Di Mare, Franco’s daughter, at the delivery of a plaque from the National Asbestos Observatory in memory of her dad. The award was presented during the meeting: “Asbestos and depleted uranium, in war and in peace: the role of Europe and the functions of the Legal Profession” promoted by the ONA and held today in the Sala Laudato Sì of the Campidoglio.
“The National Asbestos Observatory has recorded a higher epidemiological incidence of asbestos-related diseases and tumors among our men in uniform: civilian and military personnel of the Armed Forces, rather than the security sector which requires a preventive approach – explained the President of Ona, Ezio Bonanni, – The case of Franco Di Mare is an example of the exponential risk that has determined, and still determines, an unacceptable number of cases, even among those, such as journalists and the civilian population, who should not have run any risk”. The data on the impact of the use of asbestos in the defense sector is 982 cases of mesothelioma, to which are added all the other pathologies, reaching almost 5 thousand deaths.
This is why the meeting at the Campidoglio has called for “an Olympic truce, to stop the contamination of air, water and soil which, not by chance, has been necessary since ancient times, and even more so in this context starting from July 26th”.
