Paris à Vélo, Berlin by Bike, Munich by bike – there are now offers for city tours by bike in many cities. But why not drive from metropolis to metropolis? Many cities are connected by a signposted cycle route or the route is simply based on existing long-distance cycle paths. And some routes are even included in the programs of cycle tour operators. Five fascinating metropolitan tours for city and Europe fans:
London-Paris: With a ferry across the English Channel
The name is no coincidence: Avenue verte or Greenway means and in England France the small lanes where cyclists and pedestrians have priority. Attempts were also made to route the metropolitan route mainly along avenues vertes. This 400-kilometer route between the French and British capitals was inaugurated on the occasion of the 2012 Summer Olympics.
It starts at the river thames Head south through back roads and parks through Greater London. The well-signposted National Cycle Network points the way. After sweeping kilometers through the chalk hills of the North Downs and South Downs you reach the white cliffs of the south coast at Newhaven, where the bikes are loaded onto the channel ferry to Dieppe.
From there you follow small streets through the Normandie with its many castles and monasteries further south-east. Finally, in Saint-Germer-de-Fly, a pretty village in Picardy, you can choose between two routes direction Paris choose.
Information: All important information about the route as well as a map and GPX tracks for download can be found at avenuevertelondonparis.co.uk.

Venice-Rome: The hardships of the bike tour are worth it
All roads lead to Rom. And this is a very special one for cyclists. However, the length of the route, at least 900 kilometers, and the hilly to mountainous landscape between the Adriatic Sea and the Tyrrhenian Sea require a good basic level of fitness. If you bring these with you, you can look forward to the many scenic and cultural highlights.
It starts in the lagoon city Southwards towards Lido and Chioggia and further along the Adriatic Sea to the Po Delta and on to Ravenna. Then, slowly but surely, the mountain stage begins over the Apennines in the direction of Florence. The hilly routes accompany the Italy traveler then until shortly before Rom.
That means the arrivals of the must-see cities of Tuscany and Umbria, such as Arezzo, Cortona, the old university town of Perugia and the popular pilgrimage destination of Assisi, make many a drop of sweat flow. But the picture-perfect landscape, the local cuisine and the countless picturesque places are really worth the effort.

Munich-Prague: By bike from the Isar to the Vltava
Five river bike trails set the direction for the approximately 260 kilometers through Bavaria from München to the Czech border near Furth im Wald. It goes along without major inclines IsarAbens, Danuberain and Chamb.
On the other side of the border, the 188-kilometre-long Bohemian section begins, which is a lot more demanding in terms of fitness. Cycle route no. 3 leads with a yellow sign to Domazlice, the capital of the Czech ethnic group Choden. On side roads with little traffic, you continue via Luženičky – Staňkov – Dobřany – Pilsen and Rokycany to the Brdy nature reserve.
In the Pürglitzer Forest landscape area, near the village of Hořovice, you meet the Vienna-Prague long-distance cycle path. From the historically interesting Karlstejn Castle it goes through the romantic river valley of the Berounka. Shortly before Prague, the river flows into the Vltava.

Berlin-Copenhagen: About islands in the Baltic Sea
After a few kilometers through the German capital, we head out into Brandenburg’s Blue North, meaning the Ruppiner Seenland, the popular water area between Berlin and the Mecklenburg Lake District. Many avenues, manor houses and old villages characterize the section through the wide meadows and the heathland.
There is certainly no shortage of beautiful lakes along the route, especially in the further course between Fürstenberg, Neustrelitz, Waren and the Hanseatic city of Rostock. A culture stop is recommended there. After the ferry ride over die Ostsee it says: Welcome to Falster, Møn and Zealand.
heading north to Copenhagen the long-distance cycle path often leads from island to island close to the coast over dams and bridges with beautiful views of fjords and straits. Old trading towns like Nykøbing Falster with half-timbered houses, cobbled streets and interesting museums are also on the way through Denmark’s south.
For the entire 650-kilometer route from Berlin to Copenhagen, you should estimate around 10 to 14 days, depending on your condition and cultural interest. Plus a few days sightseeing in Copenhagen.

Salzburg-Vienna: Along the Salzach, Inn and Danube
The route starts at the Mozartsteg, right next to the old town of Salzburg, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. You cycle relaxed on the Tauernradweg along the Salzach, which marks the German-Austrian border here, to Burghausen with Europe’s longest castle complex. Shortly thereafter, the Inn determines the route along the baroque towns of Schärding and Obernberg to Passau.
From there, the Danube points the way to the capital for more than 300 kilometers. There are so many sights on the well-developed Danube cycle path that you should take your time: to admire the natural wonder of the Schlögener Schlinge, to visit a modern museum in Linz, the former European capital of culture, or to stroll through Enns, the oldest city in Austria .
The extensive Melk Abbey is part of the Wachau UNESCO World Heritage Site. Wine connoisseurs get their money’s worth on this section of the river, whether in the small town of Krems or in the picturesque wine-growing villages around it. A visit to a wine tavern is a must here. After more than 450 exciting kilometers you roll in Austria’s capital Vienna. An extensive city tour with St. Stephen’s Cathedral, Hofburg and Prater is also recommended here.
