The International Association of Judges issued a statement to ask for the support of the global community against the judicial reform that was approved in commissions of the Chamber of Deputies.

In its writing, the body pointed out that “introducing the popular vote as the final and decisive decision in the process of appointing judges is in contravention of the principle that judges must be appointed on the basis of merit and objective criteria regarding their professional skills.”

The reform proposes the removal of all judges and magistrates in the country by 2025, which violates the human rights of judges, since they can only be dismissed as a result of a disciplinary process or because they are considered incapable of carrying out their duties.

For the international organization, The proposed changes must “be consistent with well-established and universal principles of law. They asked President Andrés Manuel López Obrador “to reconsider his current reform plan, in light of the ideas and principles previously expressed, and to call on the international community to join in his efforts to protect the independence of judges.”
