In a corner of the San Juan parish, a group of rural women has given life to a venture that seeks to rescue and spread an ancestral tuber: the mashwa. Gabriela Nono has given us a deeper insight into the ‘Yogurt de Mashwa Tandalla Warmis’ venture.

Situation. More than 5 years ago, the rural women’s organization ‘Mushuk Kausay’ conceived the idea of creating San Juan products for the world based on mashwa, a tuber traditionally grown in the area. The main objective of this project is to rescue this ancestral food and provide healthy and delicious alternatives for daily consumption.

However, the road has not been easy for this venture, competing in the current market is not easy, but they have managed to stand out thanks to their innovative flavor.

‘Mashwa Yogurt’ is available in 2-litre, 1-litre, 500-milliliter and 250-millilitre presentations. In addition, they offer other products derived from mashwa, such as jams, ice creams and skittles, which have also managed to earn their place in the market. One of the strengths of this enterprise is the organic production of the mashwa. Gabriela told us that “the cultivation is carried out in the same town of San Juan by the rural women of the organization.” Mashwa has numerous beneficial health properties.

Gabriela highlighted that this ancestral tuber has good qualities for health, such as preventing prostate problems and urinary tract infections. It is also recognized as a natural diuretic and a food with anticancer properties. Also, mashwa is rich in iron and calcium.
