LE FIGARO.- How many invasive species are there in France?

Madeleine JOYFUL. – An inventory of the National Museum of Natural History identified in 2019 around 500 invasive alien species on French territory. This number has increased considerably over the past 40 years (with 11 new species per metropolitan department every ten years), and the trend on a global scale shows no sign of slowing down. This is what worries the experts. It must be said that France is particularly exposed because of its coastlines, overseas territories, its place in world trade and its tourist appeal.

How did these species arrive ?

The introduction may have taken place intentionally – often when selling ornamental plants and pets – or unintentionally, via a seed contaminating seeds…
