It is commendable when the government donates 200 euros to young people for theatre, cinema and books. Are they susceptible to it at all? A comment.

If the culture pass fulfills its purpose, there will soon be nothing but 18-year-olds hanging around at concerts all over the country.

From Wednesday, one hundred million euros from the budget of the Minister of State for Culture and Media will benefit young people born in 2005. These are all those who turned 18 this year or will be. You are part of the cohort whose wild puberty phase was curbed by the corona virus. The culture pass is intended to enable them to catch up. Calculated down to around 750,000 people in this age group, the state donates 200 euros for each. After registering online, they can be booked via an app that will be activated on June 14th.

Theater and concert events as well as cinema screenings are offered, and it should also be possible to buy books, musical instruments or vinyl records with them. However, the Netflix or Disney + subscription will not be paid for, nor will video game access. The sponsor argues with the loss of live cultural experiences in the Corona period and also wants to support the industries, some of which still suffer from a lack of audience.

One can only find that good. Nevertheless, a few wishes are linked to this invention. It should be carefully examined how strong the interest of the target group is. In Berlin, museum visits are free up to the age of 18 anyway, is this accepted? Theater tickets are often heavily discounted, is that reflected in the rows of spectators? In the case of the cinema, the reduction by age is small, and there are no discounts for books and records: is demand increasing now? Or did you already get bored too much? It is also up to the institutions involved, to everyone from the environment of those born in 2005, to convey to them: There is something for free here that they can benefit from for a longer period of time. If the money is not used, that would be a bad form of saving.
