Frontrunners in the 2023 NFL MVP Race: AFC Quarterbacks Mahomes, Burrow, and Allen Lead the Pack

by time news

Frontrunners in the 2023 NFL MVP race? Look to the AFC as the Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes, the Bengals’ Joe Burrow, and the Bills’ Josh Allen are tied atop the latest odds for the award, via BetMGM, as of Tuesday morning. Here’s what you need to know:

The quarterback trio currently stands at +700 as they opened the offseason tied atop the race at +650.

Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert ranks fourth at +900. The Eagles’ Jalen Hurts carries the best odds of an NFC player — he ranks fifth overall at +1100, which is slightly worse than his opening odds of +1000.

Ravens QB Lamar Jackson comes in next at +1400. Then there’s a four-way tie to round out the top 10 at +1600 between the Jaguars’ Trevor Lawrence, the Jets’ Aaron Rodgers, the Dolphins’ Tua Tagovailoa, and the Cowboys’ Dak Prescott.

Below is a look at the latest NFL MVP odds. The odds for the rest of the NFL non-MVP awards follow. (These odds are live, so the numbers will move accordingly.):

The Athletic’s instant analysis:

Where’s the love for Hurts?

Having Hurts ranked fifth via oddsmakers seems like a steal. The Eagles quarterback finished as the runner-up last season, ahead of Burrow and Allen. Hurts would be squarely in the conversation again if the Eagles finish the regular season as the NFC’s No. 1 seed. He would have made last year’s race tighter if he hadn’t missed a couple of games late in the season. And the fact he’s below Herbert is wild to me.

Look out for Rodgers

Any kind of uptick from the Jets will be credited to the addition of Rodgers. That means he’d garner all the headlines, which should bring MVP attention to the four-time award winner. The pieces seem available around Rodgers for the former Packers quarterback to thrive in New York. But how will Rodgers handle New York?

Where are the non-QBs?

Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson stands as the highest-ranked non-quarterback in the race at +10000. That’s tied with the Cardinals’ Kyler Murray, the Raiders’ Jimmy Garoppolo, the Commanders’ Sam Howell, and the Titans’ Ryan Tannehill. That also puts 24 quarterbacks ahead of Jefferson, including the likes of the Packers’ Jordan Love, the Patriots’ Mac Jones, the Steelers’ Kenny Pickett, and the 49ers’ Trey Lance. I know MVP has basically become a quarterback award, but come on!
