People spend a large part of the day in blue LED light, from lamps or screens. To find out how that light affects our cells, scientists at Oregon State University (USA) exposed fruit flies to two weeks of intense blue light. As a control, they let a second group of fruit flies spend two weeks in the dark.

They then collected cells from the heads of the flies and analyzed them for various metabolic products. What they saw was an increase in the concentration of succinic acid (succinate) and a decrease in glutamate. The succinic acid is important for producing fuel for the cell.
