Fruity wines from Domaine de l’Horizon

by time news

Dhe Domaine de l’Horizon is a remarkable winery in Calce, about 20 minutes north-west of Perpignan near the Spanish border. Thanks to winemakers such as Gérard Gauby, Tom Lubbe (Matassa), Jean-Philippe Padié, Olivier Pithon and Thomas Teibert from Ulm from the aforementioned Domaine de l’Horizon, the place enjoys an excellent reputation among sommeliers in the big cities. Above all in Berlin and Paris, but also: in Oldenburg, one of the most important hubs for Horizon worldwide; we’ll come back to that. The white wines from Horizon are of great clarity, immense freshness and mineral drama, but also of a finesse and elegance that is unparalleled, especially in southern France. If you want to know what minerality tastes like in wine, you should try a Domaine de l’Horizon Blanc!

Delicacy and elegance as well as an almost cool, rather tart dark berry fruit are also the characteristics of the red wines of the domaine, which produces anything but alcohol-heavy wines with cooked fruit aromas. Wind blows constantly in Calce. From the north comes the Tramontane, from the Mediterranean comes the Marin. Combined with the altitude of Calce, this results in a cool climate that is unique for Roussillon, which ensures a slower ripening process in the grapes as well as moderate alcohol content and, in combination with low pH values, also for a constantly invigorating acidity. Last but not least, the terroir of Calce promotes organic viticulture. Horizon and the other producers mentioned all work biodynamically right from the start.
