FSB: Facebook smart glasses can be classified as spy devices

by time news

The design features of the first smart glasses from Facebook and Ray-Ban allow them to be considered surveillance devices, the press service of the FSB of Russia told TJ. In accordance with Art. 138.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation for illegal production, purchase or sale of such devices is punishable by up to four years in prison.

“These glasses may have design features that make it possible to classify them as special technical means intended for secretly obtaining information,” the FSB press service said in a statement.

The department did not specify what features of the glasses make it possible to classify them as spy devices. According to Art. 138.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, technical means are not considered spyware if they are in free circulation, as well as if they have visible controls for recording audio, video, photo or geolocation functions, an indicator displaying modes of use, and the corresponding marking.

Facebook unveiled the company’s first-ever smart glasses, co-created with Ray-Ban, on September 9th. The cost of the glasses, called Stories, will start at $ 299. The glasses received two 5-megapixel cameras built into the frame next to the lenses. When you shoot a photo or video up to 30 seconds in duration, the LED indicator lights up to alert others that the recording is in progress. In addition, speakers and microphones are integrated into the arms, allowing you to listen to music and make voice calls.
