“It was a panda that had a unique charm and showed many sides.”

As Japan’s oldest giant panda, Tantan, passed away, his fans mourned with tears as they reminisced about his life.

According to Japan’s Kobe Shimbun on the 2nd, after Tantan, a female giant panda raised at the Kobe City Oji Zoo in Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture, died on the 31st of last month at the age of 28 (80 years in human terms), a wreath was placed in her honor at the panda hall in the zoo on this day. The stand has been installed.

Japanese media reported that as soon as the zoo opened at 9 a.m., Tantan’s fans lined up to visit Tantan’s flower stand, reflected on Tantan’s life, and said goodbye in tears.

In the panda hall where Tantan disappeared, his favorite bamboo and fruit were placed, and a photo of Tantan eating bamboo was also displayed.

An 18-year-old student wearing a panda-patterned mask handed a white lily to the wreath stand and said, “I came to see you for the last time.”

A man (61 years old) living in Nada-ku, Kobe City, brought a bouquet of white flowers in the shape of a tantan in his arms. He said that Tantan’s turbulent life, including the loss of a baby, a spouse, and fighting illness, seemed to overlap with his own life, saying, “It had a unique charm. He expressed his gratitude, saying, “He showed me a variety of sides.”

A female office worker (49), who said she had been visiting Tantan whenever she felt frustrated ever since he came to Kobe City, wiped away her tears as she said her final goodbyes to Tantan. He said to Tantan, “There are no hard drugs in heaven. “Go slow,” she lamented.

It has been reported that the zoo plans to set up a flower stand for more than a month and is also considering holding a farewell party.

Tantan was loaned from China’s Sichuan Province in 2000 at the request of Kobe City, which was damaged by the Great Hanshin-Awai Earthquake, to “bring bright topics to the affected area.” He had an eventful life during his lifetime.

Tantan was raised with Koukou, a male panda rented in 2002, but Koukou died 10 years later and has been living alone.

In 2007, she experienced a stillbirth, and in 2008, she successfully gave birth through artificial insemination, but due to the great earthquake in Sichuan Province, she was unable to receive help from Chinese experts, and the baby died four days after birth.

I couldn’t even return home. It was originally supposed to return to China in 2020, when the breeding period agreed between Japan and China expired, but the return was postponed due to the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19).

In April 2021, a heart disease that appeared to be caused by aging was discovered, and the date of return was extended to receive treatment, and he eventually left for heaven on the 31st of last month.
