Millions of drivers think this is great: E10 fuel costs on average less at German petrol stations than it did at Christmas two years ago.

In August, drivers were able to fill up their tanks more cheaply than in any other month of the year so far. A liter of E10 gasoline cost an average of 1.721 euros nationwide, almost five cents less than in July, when the lowest price to date was reached, as the ADAC in Munich announced on Monday. Diesel cost 1.596 euros – after 1.652 euros in the previous month.

According to the ADAC, diesel was as cheap in August as it was last in June 2023. Consumers last paid less for petrol in December 2023.

“The drop in prices at the pumps is largely due to the still moderate crude oil prices,” explained the automobile club. A barrel of Brent was mostly quoted below the 80 dollar mark in August. A strong euro also encouraged the falling prices.

It is entirely unclear whether prices will continue to fall or soon rise again. This depends on the further development of the global economy, geopolitical tensions and the production strategies of the major oil-exporting countries.

The ADAC recommends filling up in the evening between 7 and 8 p.m. or between 9 and 10 p.m. At 7 a.m. a liter costs a good six cents more.
