Fuel prices: diesel and SP95-E10 are falling, an effect of sales at cost?

The mano a mano between diesel and SP95 continues but, this time, on the decline. According to reports from the Ministry of Ecological Transition carried out last week, the prices of diesel and SP95-E10 fell between September 25 and 30. The first fell by almost three cents to settle at 1.91 euros per liter on average. The second recorded a more significant drop of 3.4 cents and was displayed at the same price of 1.91 euros per liter.

Such a drop for the two main fuels used by French motorists has not been seen since the beginning of July. Between July 3 and 9, a liter of diesel cost 1.66 euros and then made a summer rise, with the exception of a drop of one cent in mid-August. Ditto for SP95-E10, raised at that time to 1.78 euros per liter and which since the beginning of July has experienced a constant surge. In July alone, the increase was constant, forcing motorists to pay 10 cents more per liter on average.

A stabilization of the barrel of Brent

The record of the year, recorded on September 22 at 1.94 euros for the SP95-E10 and 2.01 euros for the SP98, will therefore not be beaten for the moment. This modest drop comes at a time when mass retail brands have embarked on sales operations at cost price. And we should undoubtedly see this as one of the first effects of the commitments of brands like Carrefour, E.Leclerc or Casino to sell fuels without margin. The 2 or 3 cents correspond roughly to the profit that the distributors made.

The other explanation for this decline in prices could lie in the price of a barrel of crude oil (Brent). The latter stabilized last week, again according to figures from the Ministry of Ecological Transition, at 95.2 dollars (90.6 euros) against 73 dollars at the beginning of July.
