If you fill up in the morning, you pay extra: This rule of thumb also applies in 2023, according to an analysis by the ADAC. Although prices no longer fluctuate as much, those who fill up at the right time continue to save.

The prices at the gas stations no longer fluctuate so much. With Super E10 in May there was an average of 8.1 cents between the daily high in the morning and the daily low in the evening, as the ADAC announced.

For diesel it was 8.9 cents. That quickly makes a few euros difference when filling up, but a year ago the difference was much higher. At that time there were a good 16 cents for diesel and around 10 cents for E10 between the daily high and daily low.

Filling up late saves money

According to the ADAC, the cheapest time to refuel is between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m., when both diesel and E10 are almost 4 cents cheaper than the daily average. Even just before 7 p.m., the prices were a good 3 cents below average. Anyone who refuels before 11 a.m., on the other hand, has to pay more than the daily average. The fuel is most expensive at 7.00 in the morning. Then E10 is a good 4, diesel even 5 cents above the daily average.

As a rule, the price of gas jumps steeply in the morning and then moves downwards in a wave movement until late in the evening. From 5 p.m. it is usually relatively cheap, from 10 p.m. it goes up again. The ADAC advises taking advantage of the price low in the evening if possible.

Special situation on the fuel and crude oil market

“Last year we had completely different framework conditions for fuel pricing,” explains ADAC fuel market expert Jürgen Albrecht, explaining why the fluctuations were greater at the time. “The special situation on the fuel and crude oil market in the last year also influenced the extent of the daily price differences. This has now approached the previous level again.”

The ADAC has been collecting daily fluctuations in May since 2015. During this period they were five times higher and three times lower than this year. (dpa)
