Fuel shortage: Sri Lanka to hand over pumps to foreign companies

by time news

Colombo: Sri Lanka is looking for new ways to tackle severe fuel shortages. Energy Minister Kanchana Vijayasekara has said that the country is planning to hand over the operation of petrol pumps to foreign fuel companies. Efforts are being made to bring at least four foreign companies into the country to improve fuel supply. Apart from the public sector Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC), only the Indian Oil Corporation supplies fuel to Sri Lanka. The plan is to hand over CPC pumps to foreign companies willing to supply fuel in Sri Lanka.

Out of CPC’s 1190 pumps, 400 pumps will be handed over to foreign companies. Meanwhile, two ministers will travel to Russia today to buy oil directly from Russia at lower prices.

Petrol and diesel prices were hiked again yesterday. Petrol price has been hiked by Rs 50 and diesel by Rs 60. This is the third price hike in three months. With this, petrol will cost Rs 470 per liter and diesel Rs 460 per liter.

The token system has been in effect at the pumps since yesterday. There is currently no fuel stock in the country. Fuel will be provided when the new stock arrives.

For this you need to register your mobile number at the petrol pump near your house. When the token number comes as an SMS on the phone, just go to the pump.
