The greening of the 2024 budget has hit a first pitfall. To save money while respecting its promise not to increase taxes, the government intended to attack “brown niches”, that is to say, to reduce tax advantages which have a negative impact on CO2 emissions. Bercy wanted to take an emblematic measure in particular: removing tax reductions on diesel for heavy goods vehicles. It won’t happen.

The government’s firm position, displayed until very recently, has been shattered by the economic reality of the sector. “The tax level for diesel is 45 cents for road hauliers. This is higher than what is practiced in Spain and Italy. I will not weaken our carriers! », justified the Minister of the Economy Bruno Le Maire, this Thursday, on France Info.
