A new little boost for those who are most affected by rising fuel prices. During an interview on TF1 and France 2 at 8 p.m., Emmanuel Macron announced aid “limited to workers” and the poorest, and which could reach “100 euros per car per year”.

“I asked the government, for the upcoming budget, to continue to support working French people (…). It is not a check, it is a mechanism which will be limited to workers, which will not go beyond what we call the first five deciles, that is to say the 50% of the most modest French people, and which will be a maximum of 100 euros per car per year, said Emmanuel Macron. It’s targeted. We do not help households that do not need it. »

This is in fact a renewal of the “worker fuel allowance” implemented at the start of 2023. The 100 euro fuel allowance had benefited 4.3 million people, at a cost of 430 million euros at the start of 2023. These amounts are much lower than a general discount which would have cost around 12 billion euros based on a discount of 20 cents per liter for one year.

A couple will be able to benefit from it

According to Bercy, the sum of 100 euros corresponds to aid of 20 cents per liter for six months for a motorist driving 12,200 km/year with a vehicle consuming 6.5 liters per 100 km. In Paris, where it is easy to do without a car, only 9% of people meeting the income and employment criteria applied for compensation this year, compared to 88% in Pas de Calais.

These are the same orders of magnitude in all rural departments, observes Bercy, who thus believes that the compensation “hit its target”. A couple whose two members each have a car will be able to benefit from two allowances if they do not exceed the expected income threshold.

Emmanuel Macron announced, however, that there would no longer be a bill authorizing the resale of fuel at a loss, as announced by Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne, and that all distributors refused. The measure “will not be in the text” on anti-inflation measures presented Wednesday to the Council of Ministers, “we are keeping it as a threat,” he assured. The Prime Minister “will bring together all the players in the sector this week and ask them to do so at cost price”.

He recalled that in its 3,500 service stations, TotalEnergies had limited the prices of its fuel to 1.99 euros per liter. “The other distributors are not refiners like Total is. For everyone else, we are going to ask the refiners to give us transparency, see where there are those who are profiting and look for their margins,” he assured.

“DIY”, denounced in return the RN deputy Sébastien Chenu on BFM, when the boss of LR Éric Ciotti estimated that Emmanuel Macron had “not taken the measure of the difficulties that the French undergo on a daily basis in the drop in purchasing power”.
