TotalEnergies will maintain its cap on fuel prices at 1.99 euros in 2024, Bruno Le Maire announced this Wednesday morning on RTL. The multinational “will maintain the cap at 1.99 euros on all its fuels, in all its stations for the entire year 2024,” insisted the Minister of the Economy. He “welcomed” this commitment, “it is real protection”.

In the midst of the war between Hamas and Israel, Bruno Le Maire explained that the consequences on the energy sector were “limited” today, but that there could be repercussions in the future. “This is why I had the opportunity to speak with the president of Total, Patrick Pouyanné”, who renewed the offer at 1.99 euros maximum.

This boost at the pump has been in place since March 1, 2023. But in this first capping, certain fuels, such as unleaded 98, which is more expensive, and “Excellium” fuels, were excluded. Bruno Le Maire speaks this time of “all fuels”. “A nation advances when everyone collectively makes an effort,” declared the minister.

Fuel at cost at other stations

The maintenance of this offer had already been announced by Total in mid-September. “The cap at 1.99 euros/liter will be extended beyond the end of 2023, as long as prices remain high,” the group indicated in a press release. To deal with inflation and the increase in fuel prices this summer, a measure taxing the margins of refiners – such as TotalEnergies – in the 2024 draft budget had been considered in recent weeks. She ultimately doesn’t appear there.

Faced with the general increase in prices, several distributors, such as Leclerc or Carrefour, have announced fuel operations at cost price in recent weeks, often until the end of 2023. Thousands of stations are affected.
