The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is a stand-alone non-governmental organization that governs all cricket in India. And former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly was elected uncontested in 2019 as its president. Similarly, Jai Shah, son of Amit Shah, who is a key minister in the current Indian government, was appointed as the secretary who takes important decisions. Many fans were happy when Ganguly was appointed as the captain who made India, who was mired in gambling controversy when he took over as the captain in the year 2000, to win many victories in the next few years through his action-oriented captaincy.

Ganguly

Because all the fans and ex-players believed that he will enrich the Indian cricket and manage the board as well. When he duly took over, Ganguly signed the first move to raise the salaries of local cricketers and arranged for India to play a day-night Test match against Bangladesh at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens. So while the fans are happy, there is a rule that anyone working in the management of the BCCI and the state board that runs under it can only hold office for 6 years.

Supreme Court Judgment:
Sourav Ganguly, who was the president of the Bengal Cricket Board before 2019, completed his 6-year tenure in 2020. Similarly, the tenure of Jai Shah, who has been working as an administrator in the Gujarat Cricket Board since 2013, has also ended. However, he and his executives wanted to continue as BCCI chief for a few more years and filed a case in the Supreme Court to change the rules and create new rules.

Therefore, this case has been going on in the Supreme Court for the past few months while continuing to function in their positions even after the end of their tenure. Its main argument was held today in the Supreme Court before a bench comprising Justices DY Chandrasud and Hima Koli. Tushar Mehta, who argued on behalf of BCCI, argued that as a non-governmental private organization for the last 70 years under the control of ICC, BCCI has been working as an organization that has successfully brought pride to the country in international cricket.

The Supreme Court bench which examined and accepted it has given approval to the terms requested by the BCCI and ordered a new one. This means that the term of office of those currently or in the future being in charge of BCCI or State Cricket Board has been changed from the existing 6 years to 12 years. A maximum of 6 years in the BCCI organization and 6 years in the state board organization can be served by a person.

Ganguly continues:
As a result of this, the expected decision of the BCCI has come, so the news has come out that Sourav Ganguly, who is already the president, will continue as the president for the 2nd time again for the next 3 years. Along with him, most of the current BCCI executives, including Jay Shah, will continue to serve in their positions for the next 3 years.

Although some fans supported this decision, many fans expressed their displeasure on social media because of Sourav Ganguly’s interference in aspects like team selection and Virat Kohli’s captaincy in recent times.
