After just one year, Niclas Füllkrug left BVB for West Ham. Now he explains his move – and makes a telling hint.

For the first time since the European Championships at home, the German national football team is coming together again these days. Next Saturday, the DFB team will face Hungary in the Nations League, and three days later they will face the Netherlands.

At the DFB press conference on Wednesday, he explained his decision again and indirectly took aim at BVB. “I want to offer a certain level of transparency so that the viewer, the fan, understands me. But I don’t want to step on anyone’s toes,” said Füllkrug. “There are various reasons why I even started thinking about a transfer. There’s no point beating around the bush,” said the striker.

“Of course, a transfer like the one BVB made is not the greatest sign of trust for me,” said Füllkrug with regard to the signing of Serhou Guirassy. Then “very attractive inquiries” came from West Ham and a few other clubs, so he decided to fulfill another dream.

“The Premier League is a very special place. It will be a huge challenge for me, I know that,” Füllkrug continued. “But I simply felt an incredible conviction there, an incredible appreciation in all areas that this club, this coach, the manager really wanted to sign me and also showed me a great plan.”

In the end, numerous things prompted him to take a new path after the Champions League and the European Championships at home. “I think I can also say that I gave my best on the pitch in these competitions, so that I was shown this appreciation and it was just so extreme that I said, I want to do it.”

Conversely, this also means that Füllkrug moved because the BVB officials did not show him the appreciation he felt he deserved by signing Guirassy. A thorn in the side that is clearly still deep within the striker.
