Over 100 bikes were donated!

Menges – In Menges, a very special bike check took place on Friday, June 10th at the municipal building yard – over 100 bicycles were donated for the Ukrainian guests, which had already been handed in at the building yard the previous day.

The city of Menges would like to thank all donors and those involved and helpers on site! We were looking for bicycles of all kinds, especially children’s, youth and women’s bicycles, which were then made (again) fit for road traffic in the mobile repair shop by the RadChecker team from RadKULTUR Baden-Württemberg for the Ukrainian refugees.

The action was initiated by the City of Menges’ Ukraine Aid Task Force in order to give the Ukrainian refugees living in Menges some mobility and quality of life. Of course, all other interested citizens were also cordially invited to the bike check, which many cyclists took advantage of.

Martin Klawitter (contact person for the task force) and Mayor Stefan Bubeck, who were on site at different times, were very pleased with how many different and well-preserved bicycles were handed in. Frank Baur, head of the municipal building yard, coordinated and sorted the wheels in advance, which were then checked for roadworthiness by the skilled mechanics in the mobile repair shop.

The brakes, lighting system, bell and tire pressure were checked and minor defects were rectified on site. During the inspection there were tips on bike maintenance and care: such as whether the chain needs to be oiled, whether there are enough reflectors, how to adjust the saddle correctly, etc. (More about the RadKULTUR campaigns in the city of Menges under www.radkultur-bw.de/mengen)

Immediately after the bike check, around 25 Ukrainian refugees were able to choose their new means of transport. As Martin Klawitter reported, helmets and bicycle locks will also be provided in a timely manner. The remaining bicycles are to be distributed to the new residents in Bussenstraße and other municipalities from the end of June. Since a number of found bicycles have also accumulated at the construction yard in the past two years, an auction of all the remaining bicycles is planned for July, with the proceeds going to the Ukraine aid.

We would like to thank all bicycle donors, the Task Force Ukraine Help and everyone involved for making this special donation and RadCheck campaign possible and in large quantities!
