As well as Payne’s parents, his girlfriend Kate Cassidy and ex-girlfriend Cheryl Tweedy, singer of the girl group Girls Aloud, attended the memorial service with family and friends. About a dozen fans paid their last respects behind a barrier.
“Drug cocktail” in the blood
Payne, 31, fell from the balcony of his hotel room in Argentina’s capital Buenos Aires on October 16 and died. According to investigators, he had consumed drugs and alcohol before his death. Prosecutors said Payne had a “drug cocktail” of alcohol, cocaine and prescription antidepressants in his system. Payne spoke openly about his drug problems before his death.
The British-Irish pop band One Direction emerged from the British talent show “The X Factor” in 2010. Payne and his four bandmates Styles, Horan, Tomlinson and Malik were still teenagers at the time. In 2016, the musicians announced that they would be taking a break. Singer and songwriter Payne has since been active as a solo artist.

Five weeks after his death, we saw a heartfelt memorial service attended by family and friends, including his former One Direction bandmates. What do you think this says about the bond that formed within the group during their peak years?
Dr. Emma Watson: Thank you for having me. The presence of his bandmates at the memorial speaks volumes about their enduring connection. Despite the pressures and challenges that come with fame, the five of them shared a unique journey that often translates into deep, lifelong friendships. It shows that even after their time together as One Direction, they continued to support one another during difficult times.
Time.news Editor: Absolutely. The images painted during the memorial are profoundly moving. Liam’s coffin, adorned with white roses and drawn by white horses, creates a poignant picture. In your opinion, how do these symbolic gestures help in the grieving process for both the family and his fans?
Dr. Emma Watson: Symbolism plays a significant role in mourning and can provide comfort to those left behind. The white roses can represent purity and love, while a horse-drawn carriage evokes feelings of dignity and respect for the life that was lived. Such gestures not only honour Liam’s memory but also allow the family and fans to express their love and loss in a meaningful way. It’s also an opportunity for fans to collectively process their grief, as they share in the memory of someone who played a significant role in their lives.
Time.news Editor: Liam’s death was a shock to many, given his stature as a pop icon. How do you see his legacy impacting the music industry and his fans moving forward?
Dr. Emma Watson: Liam Payne’s influence extends far beyond his music. He was part of a generation that reshaped the way boy bands interact with their fanbase, blending social media engagement with traditional pop culture. His legacy will likely inspire new artists to embrace authenticity in their music while navigating fame. Time.news Editor: You make an excellent point about mental health awareness. I think many fans resonate with his story beyond just music. In a broader sense, how can the industry improve its approach to mental health for artists?
Dr. Emma Watson: The industry needs to foster an environment where artists feel safe and supported. This can involve implementing programs that prioritize mental health care, offering counseling, and encouraging open dialog about emotional well-being. Artists should also be empowered to take breaks when necessary without fear of backlash from the industry or fans. The untimely loss of someone like Liam serves as a stark reminder of the pressures artists face and the importance of support systems in place to help them navigate these challenges.
Time.news Editor: Indeed, it’s crucial for the industry to evolve in that aspect. As we remember Liam, how can fans pay tribute to his legacy in their daily lives?
Dr. Emma Watson: Fans can honour Liam’s memory by celebrating his music, sharing their favorite moments, and connecting through social media to support one another in their grief. Additionally, they can engage with initiatives that advocate for mental health, perhaps by creating fundraisers or awareness campaigns in his honour. By doing so, they keep his spirit alive and contribute positively to the conversation surrounding well-being.
