Fungal infections: Purple cartilage layer fungus detected in humans

In a groundbreaking discovery, a study has revealed that a purple cartilage layer fungus has been found in a human for the first time. This particular fungus is known to attack hardwood and, less commonly, coniferous wood, and is widely spread across the world. In Germany, it is often found in deciduous forests. However, a 61-year-old mushroom researcher in India has become a unique case.

The fact that this fungus can cross species boundaries is a cause for concern. The man visited a clinic with symptoms including hoarseness, coughing, severe fatigue, and difficulty swallowing. Further examination revealed an abscess next to his trachea.

Initially, no suspicious bacteria were found. However, using a special technique, experts discovered long, root-like hyphae, which are thread-like organs found in fungi. Through a DNA sample, the fungus was successfully identified.

This discovery raises unanswered questions and worries experts. How the man contracted this fungal infection remains a mystery, as he could not recall encountering the purple cartilage layer fungus recently. However, he did come into contact with other types of fungi and decaying materials.

Remarkably, the man had a healthy immune system, making this infestation even more perplexing and concerning. Typically, a pathogen would need perfect conditions to survive and thrive in a foreign and hostile environment.

Fortunately, the man’s condition improved after regular drying out of the ulcer and a two-month treatment with an antifungal agent. Even two years later, there have been no signs of re-infestation. Nevertheless, the occurrence of this particular fungal infection has raised awareness among researchers and highlighted the overlooked dangers that exist in the plant world.

The study, titled “Paratracheal abscess by plant fungus Chondrostereum purpureum- first case report of human infection,” was published in Medical Mycology Case Reports 2023.

It is important to note that while fungal infections have become a popular topic in films and series, this real-life occurrence emphasizes the need to understand the potential risks associated with these infections.
