“Scientists Explore Using Nuclear Bombs to Divert Deadly Asteroids from Earth”

A potentially deadly asteroid hurtling toward Earth could one day be diverted using technology straight out of the realm of science fiction. A new study published recently examined the possibility of firing a nuclear bomb “millions of kilometers” deep into space to alter the asteroid’s orbit and prevent a catastrophic collision with our planet.

Researchers at the National Laboratory Lawrence Livermore (LLNL) have developed a new modeling tool to evaluate the feasibility of using nuclear bombs to divert asteroids. The tool, detailed in the Planetary Science Journal, enables scientists to calculate the size and speed of the asteroid, the amount of energy needed to derail it, and the potential risks associated with using a nuclear bomb.

Leading the research team, LLNL physicist Mary Barkey outlined the potential strategy in an interview with the New York Post. “If we had enough warning, we could launch a nuclear bomb and send it millions of miles toward the asteroid approaching Earth,” Barkey said. “Then we could change the trajectory of the asteroid, keep it intact, and push it away from Earth in a controlled manner.”

The study found that a nuclear bomb could be an effective option for diverting space rocks on a collision course with Earth. However, there are also risks associated with this approach. For example, if the bomb detonates too close to the asteroid, it could potentially fragment the asteroid and create large pieces that could still pose a threat to Earth.

“While the probability of a large asteroid impact in our lifetime is low, the potential consequences could be devastating,” said Berkey. The research is seen as a step forward in developing technologies to protect the Earth from asteroid threats. However, it is important to continue researching and developing different methods to protect our planet, as the best approach is not yet clear.
