The president of the Panhellenic Federation of Hoteliers expressed his reaction to the statements of the mayor of Athens, Mr. Haris Doukas, regarding the imposition of a tax on the turnover of hotels in favor of the municipality, in order to meet the needs created by the 7 million tourists in the Greek capital, Mr. Yannis Hatzis.

Mr. Hatzis made the following statement on social media: “The negative results of the state’s inability or unwillingness to establish a specific legislative framework for the operation of the short-term rental market will not be paid for again by the hotel industry.
The easy solution of shouldering new additional burdens on the hotels as the usual burdens will find us across the street.
If we want to limit the consequences caused by the uncontrolled operation of this activity, the solution is not to impose new rates and fees on the legal tourist activity.
If a Municipality wants to help effectively, it can and should ask the relevant Ministries to issue the regulation provided for in paragraph 8 of article 111 of Law 4446/2016 KYA and to establish restrictions on short-term rentals based on it.
And in such an effort he will find us allies”.
