G. Landsbergis assures that he proposed to denounce the contracts with Russia and Belarus immediately: the information of the Presidency is misleading

by times news cr

“This is misleading information. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has always called for the immediate termination of treaties, especially those of great importance, contributing to the interests of the aggressor. (…) The autumn session was chosen only because it was not signed in the Presidency. There was no other option,” G. Landsbergis asserted to reporters in the Seimas on Tuesday.

“When it was submitted by the Government, there was enough time to denounce it in the spring session. Later, there were two extraordinary meetings – it was possible to denounce during them and finish the matter,” the minister explained, adding that if the president delays any longer, the procedure may move to the spring session.

According to the head of Lithuania’s diplomacy, the president’s decision to take his time in submitting the above-mentioned contracts with the aggressor countries to the denunciation of the Seimas raises questions.

“It seems to me that the question is legitimate, why, after terminating all the contracts, the two, which are probably the most important, are left intact. (…) In our opinion, the aggressor has a great interest in maintaining those agreements”, noted G. Landsbergis.

On Tuesday, Asta Skaisgirytė, the president’s chief advisor on foreign policy issues, stated to “Žinių radio” that the problem, due to the fact that the Presidency is allegedly delaying submitting the above-mentioned contracts to the Seimas for denouncing, is being created “in an empty place”. She pointed out that the initiator of the issue, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, proposed to solve the issue during the autumn session of the parliament.

On Monday, the news portal lrt.lt announced that the Presidency is delaying submitting to the Seimas to denounce the agreements with Russia and Belarus regarding the promotion of investments and their protection. As the portal indicated, the Government’s decision to denounce the investment promotion and protection agreements with Russia and Belarus was adopted on May 22. The spring session of the Seimas lasted until July 18, and two extraordinary sessions were held on August 13 and September 3.

For its part, the Presidency claimed that it will be done in the near future.

After it became clear that the president still did not submit the projects regarding the denunciation of the aforementioned contracts to the Seimas, the member of the conservative faction, Matas Maldeikis, wrote to the Department of State Security (VSD), requesting to make public some of the conclusions of the temporary investigation commission of the Seimas, which examined the history of the reporter Tomas Gailius. In the latter, it was stated that G. Nausėda was vulnerable due to his and the former advisors of the head of the country’s connections with representatives of the Belarusian fertilizer business.
