“After it became clear that G. Markovičienė was driving under the influence, the “Nemunas Aušra” party removed her from party members and the Seimas elections today. That is, G. Markovičienė will not run with “Nemunas aushra” in either the multi-mandate or single-mandate electoral district,” states the press release of “Nemunas aushra”.

In turn, the Central Election Commission (CEC) informs that there is a basis for removing G. Markovičienė from the Seimas elections.

“The Election Code indicates that one of the reasons for canceling a candidate’s registration may be the fact that a pre-trial investigation has been initiated against him. The political party that nominated the candidate can apply to the CEC and submit a request for cancellation of the candidate’s registration, and the commission makes the appropriate decision at the meeting,” states the CEC’s response to Elta.

This provision appeared in the Election Code after 2023. municipal elections.

According to the CEC, if a candidate’s registration is cancelled, the numbers on the list of other candidates do not change, the number of the candidate who withdrew from the election is simply no longer on the list

“The political party Nemunas Aušra has already informed the Supreme Election Commission that it will send the request for canceling the candidate’s registration by the end of the day,” the commission informs.

R. Žemaitaitis Eltai, who learned about the traffic incident caused by a drunk colleague on Monday, said that he would like to remove the politician from the election list, but doubted whether such a possibility exists.

On Monday, ELTA reported that G. Markovičienė, a candidate for the Seimas of “Nemunas Aušra”, allegedly caused an accident while intoxicated and fled the scene of the accident. G. Markovičienei was found to have a blood alcohol level of 2.39, which is the average level of drunkenness.

The accident happened last Tuesday, around 5:30 p.m., in Kaunas, on Iniciatoriu Street.

The police announced that a Mercedes-Benz car driven by a drunk 47-year-old woman obstructed a parked Ford car and left the scene of the traffic accident. The driver, who soon returned, was found to be moderately drunk.

The representative of the police department, Ramūnas Matonis, confirmed to Eltai that G. Markovičienei was found to be intoxicated in the aforementioned accident.

In case of such drunkenness as was found for G. Markovičienei, the police starts a pre-trial investigation for driving under the influence, the driver faces criminal liability.

I take full responsibility for this and I am ready to face all the consequences – both those that have already emerged and those that may yet appear,” G. Markovičienė writes on her Facebook account.

“I decided to withdraw from the electoral struggle. I think that this is the most correct step in this situation, because political activity requires not only trust, but also transparency. I thank everyone for their support and understanding, this decision is not easy, but necessary,” she emphasized.
