“At the beginning of this summer, I had to make a decision about my future. Performing one’s duties in the club with quality, when the most important decisions need to be shared, and pursuing the Olympic dream have become incompatible things. As time has shown, I chose the path of Olympic bronze,” said Gintautas Matulis about his resignation from the position of director.
G. Matulis’ plans include rest, time with his family, and then new activities and a return to the basketball court.
“I made a decision to concentrate on sports. First of all, I want to rest after really stressful preparations for the Olympic Games and the Olympics itself, I want to devote more time to my family and spend time with them, and then I will start new activities and work on the basketball court”, said G. Matulis about his future plans.
G. Matulis, who brought the Olympic bronze to Utena, hopes that the medal will become symbolic and bring success to the “Uniclub Casino – Juventus” club in the upcoming season.

At the moment, Eimantas Skersis will temporarily hold the position of club director.
“Gints is an example of how willpower, stubbornness and hard work can one day lead to success.” On the one hand, I’m very proud of him, on the other hand, I’m a little sad that he hasn’t conquered the athlete in him yet. I had hoped that our administrative cooperation would last longer, but the saying “you can’t tell your heart” is probably very applicable here. Gintas is still burning with the desire to compete on the field and to force him to sit on a chair and grow a belly during the days is probably too early. I have no doubt that one day we will talk about working together again.
Since the law allows me to temporarily combine the duties of manager and member of the municipal council for three months, we have some time to gather our thoughts and decisions. There are club shareholders, there is a club board, together we will make the best decision on how the club administration will look like in the future. A lot of work was done in the summer, and my experience in this position is really considerable, so these changes will not really affect the club’s activities. We are moving towards the new season according to the plan”, said E.Skersis.
The Utena club will start the new season on September 18 in Antalya (Turkey), where they will compete in the FIBA Champions League qualifying tournament. Aukštaitija club will compete with Spartak Office Shoes team from Serbia in the quarter-finals of Tunir.
