“Bravo! Congratulations to discus thrower Mykolas Alekna for winning the silver medal at the Olympic Games! 21 years ago at the Stade de France stadium in Paris, his father was on the winner’s podium, and today this honor goes to Mykolas,” G. Nausėda wrote on his Facebook account on Wednesday evening.

“The whole of Lithuania is celebrating today together with the young world record holder!” he emphasized.

Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė also congratulated M. Alekna with the medal.

“To support even two athletes representing Lithuania in the fight for medals, who make you hold your breath with every discus throw, is an everyday joy and a great privilege – thanks to Mykol Aleknas and Andriis Gudžius for that!” Heartiest congratulations to Mykol, who is constantly surpassing himself, a group of the strongest rivals and a considerable burden of expectations lying on his shoulders – a great silver performance that Lithuania followed with eyes, densely beating hearts and with special pride”, says the Prime Minister’s greeting.

During the Summer Olympic Games in Paris on Wednesday evening, M. Alenkna threw the discus in her best attempt at 69.97 m. and won a silver medal. Jamaican Roje Stona became the Olympic champion, who threw the discus exactly 70 meters.

This is Lithuania’s third medal in this Olympiad – bronze was already won by skater Viktorija Senkutė and the Lithuanian men’s triples basketball team.
