“Now I’m waiting for the premiere. If everything is in order, I hope that submission will be soon. If the surname is matched with the president, everything will be fine,” G. Nausėda told Elta on Thursday.

“The president of the European Commission has not yet been elected, she will be elected, in the best case (…) on July 18, if I’m not mistaken. The president of the commission is focused on the result that will be recorded in mid-July. Then, no doubt, more concrete work will begin. By that time, without a doubt, we have to present our candidate – and maybe even more than one,” said the head of the country.

ELTA reminds that discussions regarding Lithuania’s candidate for the EC have been ongoing for some time in Lithuania. So far, it is unofficially said that the Minister of Foreign Affairs Gabrielius Landsbergis is applying for the post in Brussels. He was also named by the influential publication Politico as one of the most realistic candidates.

However, neither the minister nor Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė, who will present the candidacy of Lithuania’s representative, clearly and publicly expressed such intentions.

The ability of the Seimas Minister to become a European Commissioner is in doubt. Both the parliamentarians belonging to the opposition and some of the ruling party have publicly said that they would not approve of such a candidacy.

For his part, President Gitanas Nausėda, whose approval is necessary for the delegation of Lithuania’s representative to the EC, has repeatedly made it clear that he would not be inclined to support G. Landsbergis’ candidacy. He has stated that he could see better candidates for this position than G. Landsbergis.

In addition, the head of the country has stated that he gave I. Šimonytei the name of a person who, in his opinion, could be delegated as a representative of Lithuania to the EC.

“Yes, I said what surnames or what surname would be acceptable. The Prime Minister accepted this, in my understanding, quite favorably and so much information,” G. Nausėda told reporters in Brussels earlier.

The nomination of the Eurocommissioner is submitted by the Government after the position has been agreed with the President and the Seimas.
