The Presidency announced this on Monday.

I. Šimonytė’s candidacy for the Seimas will be presented during the parliamentary session on Tuesday.

ELTA reminds that on Friday, after the re-elected President G. Nausėda was sworn in, Prime Minister I. Šimonytė returned the powers of the Government to the head of the country. In turn, the president entrusted the Cabinet of Ministers with temporary duties.

I. Šimonytė’s Cabinet of Ministers returns G. Nausėda’s powers amid tension among politicians due to possible changes in the Government. Some time ago, the head of the country said that he believes that it is worth critically reviewing the composition of the Cabinet of Ministers, and hinted that he has specific names that, in his opinion, could be changed after the Government returns its powers. There are also disagreements regarding Lithuania’s candidate for European commissioners.

As the law provides, the Government returns its powers after the elected president is sworn in – the prime minister delivers a written statement to the head of the country. In turn, the president assigns the prime minister to perform his duties until new powers of the Seimas are obtained and a new Cabinet of Ministers is formed.

The head of the country must submit a nomination for the prime minister to the Seimas within 15 days at the latest. After the Seimas approves the Prime Minister, the President appoints him and instructs him to form the Government, which is later also approved by the head of the country.
