(ANSA) – BOLOGNA, JULY 10 – New technologies and the potential of quantum computing were among the protagonists of the first day of the G7 Science and Technology underway at the Tecnopolo in Bologna. This morning the G7 ministers attended a demonstration of the power of quantum computing, held by the professor of the University of Bologna and responsible for drafting the National Strategy on Quantum, Tommaso Calarco.
Ministers and delegates were able to see how quickly it is possible to analyse certain molecules and check their toxicity in real time. In just a few seconds, thanks to the enormous computing power, it is possible to determine the usefulness of molecules for the development of new drugs. Before the development of supercomputers, the only way to do this was by testing people with years and years of experiments, it was explained. With a supercomputer, some of these properties can be calculated in months. Quantum computers, however, have the potential to reduce these calculations to a few minutes, saving time, energy and clinical trials.
