DIG/ Citibank Gabon has just been fined a fine of 90 million francs.

This financial penalty was imposed on him by the Gabonese Authority for the Protection of Personal Data and Privacy (APDPVP) for serious breaches of personal data protection legislation.

Published in the Official Journal of the Gabonese Republic on July 5, 2024, this decision, rendered on April 25, 2024, follows a complaint filed by a former senior executive of the bank.

The APDPVP investigation revealed the existence within Citibank Gabon of a file containing sensitive data on the ethnic origin of certain employees.

This file would have served as the basis for an internal investigation aimed at establishing possible family links between these employees and the former general manager, Juliette Weisflog née Etomo Nguema.

Deliberation No. 073/APDPVP underlines that “the investigation service of Citibank Gabon SA proceeded to identify the persons to be questioned by making any connection with Mrs. Juliette WEISFLOG, to establish family ties with the latter.” The authority describes these practices as “misuse of the purpose of processing so-called sensitive personal data”.

Investigations conducted by Citibank have specifically targeted employees of Fang ethnicity from the same province as Ms WeisflogThe APDPVP strongly condemns this approach, considering it discriminatory and contrary to Gabonese law on the protection of personal data.
