GABON/Launch of the National Environment Week

June 5, 2023

Libreville, June 5, 2023 – Libreville, June 5, 2023 – On the occasion of World Environment Day, the Minister of Water and Forests, the Sea, the Environment, in charge of the Climate Plan and the of Land Allocation, Prof. Lee White, today launched National Environment Week.

Organized under the theme Solutions to plastic pollution “, the celebration of World Environment Day provides an opportunity to raise public awareness of the challenges of this scourge, to promote crucial awareness of the environmental and health consequences associated with it, and to encourage the acquisition of eco-gestures to fight against plastic pollution.

This edition is all the more special because it is part of the year dedicated to youth in the member countries of the Commonwealth and illustrates the need to act together to preserve the environment, from the earliest young age.

During his opening speech, the Minister of the Environment recalled that the need to act together to find solutions to this scourge which threatens human health and the environment: “ Solutions to plastic pollution is an objective for which each and everyone can individually provide a solution. Plastics are everywhere and of all kinds today. The current trend could lead us to have more plastic than fish in the oceans ” did he declare.

In the same vein, Prof. Lee White called for action ” continuous and strong collective ” in order to reverse this trend and recommended ” eliminate non-essential plastics from our use; and not to throw any bottles in the ordinary bins or worse in the street but only in the recycling bins so that they are recycled ».

For information, plastic waste represents nearly 80% of waste at sea. Plastic debris harms marine life in particular and the fish and shellfish we eat are not spared. Plastic that is toxic to flora and fauna is also harmful to humans.

National Environment Week celebrated from June 5 to 10, 2023 will be marked by several highlights, namely activities such as clean-up actions, conference-debates, discovery visits.
