Gabriel Attal is a pioneer by being the first openly homosexual French government leader, a singularity highlighted on social networks. And perhaps the most gratifying point is that the outpouring of hatred that we could unfortunately have expected did not take place. Indeed, the vast majority of online French expression has made this novelty a “non-subject”. When we know that this expression on social networks is often a reflection of society, it is clear that this reflection is that of a society more tolerant towards minorities.

Let’s not hide our faces: homophobic messages were indeed published on social networks following the appointment of Gabriel Attal. Some, often from the same Internet users, also reported his alleged Jewishness, with undisguised anti-Semitism. But these messages, coming largely from conspiratorial spheres, were not widely disseminated and their reach remained limited to their usual communities of influence.
