Pap Ndiaye spoke of a “attractiveness shock” for the teaching profession. Gabriel Attal, the new Minister of National Education, evokes a “knowledge shock” fundamentals for students, centered on the teaching of French and mathematics, during its back-to-school press conference on Monday 28 August. “The absolute condition for the success and development of our children”according to the current tenant of rue de Grenelle.

Gabriel Attal outlined the measures, most often already present in the back-to-school circular at the beginning of July and initiated by his predecessor Pap Ndiaye, which will punctuate the schooling of pupils from nursery school and at each level of schooling from this comeback. A big plan must emerge to train all 370,000 kindergarten teachers by 2027.

A CP, “two hours will be devoted to learning and practicing reading”. In CM1, pupils who have reading difficulties “will benefit from reinforced daily practice, in particular with the reading of long texts”. In CM2, “students must produce at least one written text”, every week, while great disparities exist between schools. Each teacher must also receive “a reference guide to writing” in January 2024.

The hour of support or reinforcement planned in French or mathematics in 6th grade is set up from the start of the school year, “in a tailor-made logic”. Each academy must also now define a “fundamentals strategy”, “an absolute obligation to better manage and better decline the learning of this knowledge”, judge Gabriel Attal. These devices are supplemented by a reinforcement of the evaluation with the generalization of the national tests passed in class of CM1 and 4th, after those set up in CP, CE1 and 6th.

Grade drop in math

This is for Gabriel Attal to“raising the bar” school, while, according to the minister, “in a quarter of a century, between 1995 and 2018, French students have lost the equivalent of a year in terms of level”. A diagnosis tempered by Eric Charbonnier, education analyst at the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). “In the PISA studies [Programme international pour le suivi des acquis], France is in the average of OECD countries in terms of reading comprehension. On the other hand, the level actually fell in mathematics between 2003 and 2018. What characterizes France above all is a significant difference in results between the best pupils and the weakest, strongly correlated with their socio-economic background.
